UHJA Member and Junior Rider Irene Powlick Achieves National and Regional Success in 2017

14 January 2018

In 2017, UHJA rider, Irene Powlick, competed successfully in Utah and at shows regionally and nationally. Competing in equitation classes at both the Winter Equestrian Festival in Florida and HITS Coachella in California, Irene placed in age equitation and medal classes. At the Colorado summer shows, she placed consistently in equitation, Big Eq medals, and 3’3” Junior Hunters on her own Carpe Diem Star and Pony Lane Farm’s Francesca. While in Colorado, Irene and Carpie gathered Maclay points; combined with points from classes at Utah’s Wasatch Horse Shows, they qualified for the ASPCA Maclay Regionals.

In September, Carpie, Irene, and trainer Michael Knight, traveled back to Colorado to compete at the Maclay regionals. Despite riding with pneumonia, Irene had a very successful show and finished 7th in the regional competition, qualifying them for the ASPCA Maclay National Finals in Lexington, Kentucky.

After competing at the UHJA Medal Finals last October, Carpie traveled to Illinois, where he met up with the Jaynes at Our Day Farm. In November, Michael Knight traveled to Kentucky, arriving the Monday before the competition.  Although Irene and Carpie did not place in the final results, the pair put in solid rounds receiving compliments from both George Morris and Anne Kursinski on their performance. Irene credits Maura Thatcher, Maggie, Alex, & Haylie Jayne. Irene, Mike Knight and the Powlick family for contributing to her incredible experience as the sole representatives of Utah in the ASPCA Maclay championships at The National Horse Show!!
